Hiking The Sacred Valley (6 Days challenging)

Price based on private excursions with personal vehicle and guide (no group excursions) and 2 to 3-star hotels.

 

This trip will introduce you to the most important highlights of Cusco and its surroundings. All of the excursions will be combined with moderate to long hikes and therefore require good physical condition. You will get to know the salt mines of Maras which have been in use since Inca times, you will visit the big archeological sites in the Sacred Valley and hike the famous Inca Trail to the UNESCO world heritage site of Machu Picchu. The last day of this tour will take you on a full day hike to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo.

  

Day 1: You will visit the ruins of Pisaq and the big supply market in Urubamba.

Day 2: Today you will visit the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo as well as the salt mines of Maras and the circular terraces of Moray.

Day 3: An early train ride takes you to the km 104 where you will start you hike on the famous Inca Trail past the ruins of Wiñay Wayna until you enter Machu Picchu through the sun gate.

Day 4: A guided tour through Machu Picchu will give you detailed insight. In the afternoon return to Cusco by train and private transport.

Day 5: A full day City Tour of Cusco which includes the archeological sites above the city.

Day 6: A spectacular day hike to Huchoy Qosqo.

Day 1:

In the morning you will head towards the Sacred Valley and visit the archeological site of Pisaq from where you will take a hike down into the town of Pisaq. On your way to the hotel you will visit the big market in Urubamba where the locals get their daily supplies. (Hotel in the Sacred Valley)


Day 2:

In the morning you will visit the archeological site of Ollantaytambo. These ruins which are located along a steep hill, where an important temple complex for the Incas on their way to Machu Picchu. Afterwards you will head to Moray and visit the circular terraces of Moray which were constructed by the Incas to optimize the cultivation of different plants. From here you will take a 3 hour hike to the salt mines of Maras and then hike another 40 minutes down to the river of Urubamba. (Hotel in the Sacred Valley)


Day 3:

From Ollantaytambo the train will take you to the km 104 where you will hike with your private guide past the archeological site of Wiña Wayna through cloud forest along the famous Inca Trail until you reach Machu Picchu which you enter through the sun gate. From here you have a stunning view of the whole complex in the afternoon light. (Hotel in Aguas Calientes)


Day 4:

Very early you will take the bus up to the famous UNESCO world heritage site of Machu Picchu. A private 3 hour tour will give you a better understanding of the importance of this holy city and you get to see the magnificent stone constructions of the Incas. In the afternoon you will head back by train to Ollantaytambo and private transport will take you back to Cusco. (Hotel in Cusco)


Day 5:

Today we will take it a little easier after all the hiking. A visit of the ruins above Cusco will start the day, and in the afternoon you will stroll through the city center visiting the cathedral as well as the most important temple of the Incas, the Qorikancha. (Hotel in Cusco)


Day 6:

Another early start will take you by private transport to the town of Tauca . Your personal guide will take you along an old Inca Trail across a mountain pass at 14.100 feet through Andean landscapes. You will have a stunning view of the snow-capped mountains Victoria and Salkantay. With some luck you may see eagles soaring over your head. Heading towards the sacred valley you finally reach the ruins of Huchoy Qosqo which means “Little Cusco”. The archeological site is located a little above the Sacred Valley. From here it is another 2 hour hike down to the town of Lamay where your private transport will wait for you and take you back to Cusco (Hotel in Cusco)
